Polish politician, an opposition activist during communist, journalist, freemason, the honorary chairman of the Labor Union, Member of Parliament of X , I , II and IV term, Deputy Speaker of the Sejm in 1993-1997.

During the occupation was a courier, a galloper, a cadet, twice imprisoned by the NKVD . He was sent to a camp near Stalinogorsk, where he worked in a coal mine.

He graduated from the Faculty of Law and the Department of Sociology at the University of Wroclaw. He was later removed from the university, where he worked as an assistant for refusing to join the ZMP (communist organization). He went to vocational education. After the October 1956 he founded letters of the Movement of Workers Councils „Facts”. He worked as a journalist specializing in reportage literary and journalistic culture.

He worked in the editorial offices of „Współczesność”, „Kultura”, in radio and television. He has directed more than 70 documentaries. I the TV was co-affairs programs, ie TV at night and Talks about suffering. He was a member of the Association of Polish Writers.

In 1980 he joined the „Solidarity” and participated in the First National Congress of Delegates in Gdansk Oliwa. During the martial law was interned for a period of about a year, later he was arrested on charges of conspiracy. In 1989, the first time received a parliamentary seat in the Parliament of contract on behalf of the Citizens Committee, during the term of office was founded Solidarity of Labour, on behalf of which in 1991 came to the Parliament of the first term. Since 1992 it belonged to the Labour Union. From the list of groups for the third time held a parliamentary seat in the period 1993-1997, serving as the Deputy Speaker.

After losing the UP elections in 1997, he also served briefly as chairman of the Labor Union and was replaced in that position by Mark Pol.

Regularly published his essays in 1994-1997 in the „Cultural News”, later in the „Weekly Review”, and after the 2001 „Review”. From 1998 he was chairman of the board of the main Polish Red Cross. Because of health resigned in December 2003 from his position.

In 2001, he received the fourth time a parliamentary seat in a letter SLD-UP of the Warsaw district.

By order of the President Aleksander Kwasniewski of December 9, 1999 he was awarded, in recognition of his outstanding contribution in the activities of the state and the public, the Grand Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.

In the same year (September 1st) during anniversary ceremony at Westerplatte as president of the Polish Red Cross was awarded the Commander of Missio Reconciliationis.
