Son of poet Stanislaw Piętak. Trained as an engineer, he also completed postgraduate studies at the University of Maria Curie -Sklodowska University. In the early 80s associated with the democratic opposition. Since 1986 he worked as a computer programmer, inter alia in France and Belgium. He was head of projects including the Master Cards, Credit Lyonnais and GAN. He was active in the Free Software Movement, he was also the coordinator of the Working Group on Law and Justice of public administration. In 2006-2007 served as Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs in the government of Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz and Jaroslaw Kaczynski. He was on the team for the preparation of the reform of state infrastructure.
In 2008 awarded the Order of Polonia Restituta. In 2010, however, refused to adopt the badges of the grounds of the assessment of his involvement in the opposition movement 80s and a critical attitude towards the president Kaczynski.
